What are Open Graph tags?
Open Graph tags are HTML meta tags that control how a page appears when shared on social media platforms. Without them, platforms pull whatever title, image, and description they can find on the page, often with poor results. With them, you control exactly what gets shown.
The most important tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. These cover the vast majority of sharing scenarios across Facebook, LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, and Slack.
og:image
The image tag has the biggest visual impact. Use a 1200 x 630 pixel image for best results across platforms. A missing og:image often results in no image or a random one being pulled from the page.
og:title
The title shown in the social card. This can differ from your page title tag and is often worth writing specifically for the sharing context rather than copying from the title tag.
og:description
The description shown beneath the title in most social cards. Keep it under 200 characters. It does not affect search rankings but does affect whether people click through from social shares.
Platform differences to know
Each platform renders Open Graph cards slightly differently. What looks good on Facebook may be cropped on X or displayed differently on LinkedIn.
Facebook and LinkedIn
Both use the standard 1.91:1 image ratio (1200 x 630px recommended). They show the og:title, og:description, and og:site_name below the image. Images smaller than 600 x 315px will not display in the large card format.
X (formerly Twitter)
X uses its own Twitter Card meta tags but falls back to Open Graph when they are not present. It supports two card styles: summary (small image) and summary_large_image (full-width image). Add a twitter:card tag to control which one appears.
Slack, WhatsApp, and messaging apps
These apps use Open Graph tags to generate link previews in conversations. A clear og:image and a concise og:title make the difference between a preview that gets clicked and one that gets ignored.
