What a site SEO audit checks

A technical SEO audit crawls every page on your site and checks it against a set of known ranking and indexability signals. The goal is to find issues that prevent search engines from properly crawling, indexing or ranking your content.

Crawlability and indexability. Are search engines able to reach your pages? Crawly checks your robots.txt directives, noindex tags and canonical tags to identify pages that may be blocked or excluded from the index unintentionally.

On-page elements. Title tags, meta descriptions and H1 tags are checked for presence, uniqueness and length. Missing or duplicate values are flagged for every affected URL.

Status codes. Crawly detects 404 broken pages, 5xx server errors and redirect chains so you can fix them before they impact rankings or user experience.

Image audit. Every image on every page is checked for missing alt text, which affects both accessibility and image search indexing.

Security headers. Crawly audits HTTP response headers including HSTS, Content Security Policy, X-Frame-Options, Referrer-Policy and X-Content-Type-Options.

Hreflang. For international sites, Crawly validates hreflang tags: checking for missing x-default values and malformed language codes.

Content duplication. Near-duplicate and duplicate content issues are flagged so you can consolidate or differentiate pages before they compete with each other in search.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a systematic review of a website to identify technical issues that affect how search engines crawl, index and rank the site. It covers on-page elements like titles and meta descriptions, technical factors like status codes and canonicals, and structural issues like redirect chains.

Is Crawly's SEO audit free?

Yes. Crawly is completely free to download and use. There is no paid tier, no trial period and no URL limit. Every feature, including the full issues audit, is available at no cost.

How many pages can it audit?

There is no hard limit. Crawly can audit sites with thousands or tens of thousands of pages. Performance depends on your Mac's resources and the target server's response time.

What does a site SEO audit check?

Crawly checks 19 issue types across titles, meta descriptions, headings, status codes, indexability, image alt text, security headers (HSTS, CSP, X-Frame-Options) and hreflang tags. Every issue is grouped by category and severity.

How long does a site audit take?

Most small to mid-size sites complete in 1-5 minutes. Larger sites with tens of thousands of pages may take longer. Crawly shows live progress so you can see pages being discovered in real time.

Does Crawly work on large sites?

Yes. Crawly has no URL cap and handles large sites well. For very large sites, you can also use List mode: paste a specific set of URLs for a targeted audit rather than a full crawl.
